2013-14 Resident Artist Program features new artists & production of Nine More Operas 90 Minutes

(Syracuse, NY) – KeyBank proudly presents the Syracuse Opera 2013-2014 Resident Artist Program featuring performances of a new production of Nine More Operas in 90 Minutes co-presented by WRVO Public Media throughout Upstate and Central New York. Now in its sixth season, Syracuse Opera’s Resident Artist Program brings live opera to the broader community and is the cornerstone of Syracuse Opera’s educational and outreach programming.

This all-new production of Nine More Operas in 90 Minutes will feature fully staged operatic scenes from Carmen, Faust,Julius Caesar and Susannah, among others, as well as musical theater selections from West Side Story and Sunday in the Park with George.

This season’s Resident Artists are soprano Raquel Suarez, tenor Kevin Newell, bass-baritone Brandon Coleman, and principal coach Kristin Ditlow. Stage director Patricia Weinmann returns to direct.

Soprano Raquel Suarez counts among her signature roles Lauretta in Gianni Schicchi, Adele in Die Fledermaus, the title role in Cendrillon, and Musetta in La Bohème. Recently her work was seen at Dicapo Opera Theatre, New York Lyric Opera, and Opera Williamsburg. Miss Suarez is a graduate of the Manhattan School of Music.

Tenor Kevin Newell has sung numerous roles with Fort Worth Opera and Florentine Opera in Milwaukee, WI, where he has also appeared as a soloist with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra and was a winner of the Milwaukee District Metropolitan Opera Auditions. Mr. Newell’s additional professional credits include performances with Chautauqua Opera and Seagle Music Colony in New York, and Central City Opera House Association in Colorado.

Recent performances for bass-baritone Brandon Coleman include Angelotti in Tosca and Ibn-Hakia in Tchaikovsky’s Iolanta for Dicapo Opera Theatre, Dulcamara in L’Elisir d’Amore and Parsons in The Cunning Little Vixen for Opera North, and Sarastro in The Magic Flute for Tuscia Opera Festival. Mr. Coleman has participated in young artist programs for Sarasota Opera, Opera New Jersey, and Toledo Opera.

Kristin Ditlow, American pianist, vocal coach and conductor, is enjoying a career in opera and recital collaboration in the United States and abroad. She is an alumna of the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, Westminster Choir College, Tanglewood Music Center, and Merola Opera Program. She has worked at the Curtis Institute of Music, in addition to many opera companies within the United States. During the fall of 2012, Kristin appeared in recital with Ellen Rose, principal violist of the Dallas Symphony, throughout the People’s Republic of China. Her recent summer activities include teaching and performing in Italy, Czech Republic, and Hungary.

International stage director Patricia Weinmann has staged several Syracuse Opera productions including main stage productions of Sweeney Todd – The Demon Barber of Fleet Street and Carmina Burana, as well as Resident Artist Program productions.
